PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) – The pilot of a logging helicopter was killed when his chopper crashed in steep terrain on the northern Olympic Peninsula.

Dispatchers say a flight mechanic heard the pilot call out a mayday sometime around 7:30 a.m. that he was going down.

Brian King with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said the wreckage of the UH1 Huey helicopter was spotted by a logger just before 9 a.m. Friday and he confirmed the pilot had died.

KOMO reports the pilot was later identified as Joshua Michael Tripp, 44, of Missoula, Mont. Tripp is the owner of Iron Eagle Helicopter, Inc., of Missoula, Montana.
