Volunteers Needed to Drive Cancer Patients to the Doc
(Volunteer driver Janine, and Courtney Clark from the American Cancer Society)
Hearing “you have cancer” from the doctor has got to be one of the worst things to hear, ever. Then comes all of the doctors appointments and radiation and chemo treatments. Transportation barriers are the number one reason for missed appointments. The cost is a factor, or maybe the patient is just too sick to drive. There’s a program by the American Cancer Society called Road to Recovery that recruits volunteers to take people to and from all those visits.
If you are facing cancer and need rides to treatment, you can call 1-800-227-2345. You can also sign up to be a volunteer at the same number or by going to the Road to Recovery website. You can sign up to drive so that it fits your schedule. Volunteer drivers are not paid, and do have to be 18, and have a valid license and insurance.
