Traffic Related Deaths Decline in Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) – The number of people who died in traffic-related encounters fell slightly in Seattle last year.

The Seattle Times reported Monday that the Seattle Department of Transportation recorded 14 deaths on city streets in 2018, down from 19 deaths in 2017.

Eight of the deaths were of pedestrians, five involved vehicles and one person was bicycling.

The department recorded that 170 people were seriously injured in traffic-related encounters last year. The city recorded 168 serious injuries in 2017.

The number of deaths and serious injuries on city streets has trended downward slightly in recent years as the city’s population has grown.

The city’s Vision Zero goal aims to have no fatalities and serious injuries by 2030 by using strategies that include lowering speed limits and redesigning roadways.
