Time to Pull Your Kids from Public Schools

Teachers’ unions keep offering great reasons to get your kids out of failing government-run public schools as soon as possible. A union strike has hit Greater Albany Public Schools, with teachers walking the picket lines this morning. This means even less time in class in a state already infamous for having the shortest school year in America at just 165 days.

The graduation rate last year was 81%, which might lead you to think that schools only fail one child in five. If only it were that simple. Among those who stay in school, 43% fall below the minimum achievement level. So, between the dropouts and the students who don’t reach learning benchmarks, schools fail more than 50% of all kids.

Meanwhile, Oregon ranks 21st in the country for spending on K-12 education, shelling out more than $17,000 per student annually. You could send your kid to the University of Oregon for less than that. Democrat governors have worsened the situation by allowing kids to get diplomas even if they can’t read, write, or count—a participation trophy system akin to T-ball.

Now, teachers are demanding bigger paychecks despite these failures and are cutting class days for their strike. It’s time to rescue your kids from this mess and demand educational choices that actually serve them.
