Teens Arrested, Guns Recovered After Carjacking & Chase

PORTLAND, Ore. — Four guns were recovered from a stolen car and three teens were arrested following a carjacking and chase from Portland into Gresham on Thursday.

A victim reported that multiple people approached him on North Cecelia Street near Haven Avenue just before 2:15pm.  One was armed with a gun in the waistband and the group demanded the man’s car and other property.  He was not injured.

The stolen vehicle was tracked more than seven hours later.  Officers tried to stop it on a dead-end at Southeast 133rd and Brooklyn Court, but the driver used the vehicle to intentionally strike a patrol car to get away.  The officers inside were not injured.

The Air Support Unit spotted the vehicle being driven recklessly, speeding, running red lights and passing vehicles in oncoming lanes.  An officer laid down spike strips near 148th and E Burnside, but the driver kept on going on deflated tires.  After a PIT maneuver, the car spun out and eventually crashed into parked vehicles at Northeast 172nd and Glisan.

The four teens inside ran off as officers surrounded the neighborhood.  Gresham Police assisted Portland and all four were detained.  Treveon Phillips and De’Shawn E. Hunt, both 18 of Gresham, are charged with unlawful possession of firearms, attempt to elude police by vehicle and unauthorized use of a vehicle.  Phillips was also wanted on an outstanding warrant.

The others were juveniles.  A 17-year-old boy from Portland is charged with unlawful possession of firearms and an outstanding warrant.  A 15-year-old boy from Portland was treated at the hospital for injuries from the crash.  He was not charged with a crime and released to his parent.

More charges are possible following additional investigation.

Among the guns recovered were a loaded AR-15 rifle and 3 loaded pistols.  One was an unmarked, unbranded “ghost” gun.
