Study says Oregon Taxes Weighing Heavily on Low-Income Families
The non-profit, non-partisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) has come out with a new study on the tax system across the country, and the poorest families in Oregon are paying some of the highest rates.
The ITEP report found that, on average, taxes take up about 12 percent of the income of Oregon’s lowest-earning tax fliers, compared to 9.7 percent of the income of the middle fifth, and 10.4 percent of the income of the richest 1 percent.
Juan Carlos Ordóñez with the Oregon Center For Public Policy says their organization is calling on Oregon Lawmakers to revamp the current tax system by boosting Oregon’s Earned Income Tax Credit through Bipartisan support. Plus, they are proposing legislatures to establish a Millionaire’s Tax.
