Six Sue Portland Over Clashes With Police

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Six people have sued the city of Portland, alleging they were roughed up by police at various protests since 2016.

The lawsuits were filed Thursday in Multnomah County and publicized by the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon.

Street protests are common in Portland, and the lawsuits note the long history of clashes between activists and officers. But the ACLU and attorneys for the protesters say police in recent years have become “increasingly militarized” in their tactics.

Five of the six lawsuits seek no more than $10,000. The other suit, filed by a woman who suffered a broken nose, asks for $200,000.

A spokesman for Mayor Ted Wheeler said the city does not comment on pending litigation.
