(Washington, DC) — California Senator Kamala Harris is introducing legislation that would decriminalize marijuana. It’s a change in the Democratic presidential candidate’s attitude on the subject. A decade ago, Harris opposed similar legislation in the Golden State while serving as San Francisco district attorney. The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, co-sponsored in the House by New York Democrat Jerry Nadler, would decriminalize pot on the federal level. It would also institute re-sentencing or expungement for marijuana convictions. Additionally it would tax the marijuana industry and use the proceeds to help with job training and small business.
