Salem, Oregon – Update: New details on the search for the suspect who shot a Salem police officer during a traffic stop last night. Police and the SWAT team have surrounded an apartment building right now, where the suspect was inside, and they’ve just taken him into custody.  We’ve also just learned the woman officer was shot multiple times. She has already been released from the hospital and is home recovering.

 

The Salem police officer shot during a traffic stop last night has been released from the hospital and is recovering this morning. Police are still searching for the shooting suspect. Authorities say the shooter got out of their van and opened fire on the officer on Highland Avenue Northeast around 8:30 last night. Salem Police Lt. Treven Upkes says cops found that van nearby a short time later. There are K9’s involved in this search. Nearby Highland Elementary School announced they would be closed today as officers search for the suspect.

The latest from Salem Police Dept.

The Salem Police officer who was injured in this incident has been released from Salem Health after receiving treatment for multiple gunshot wounds.

After more than four hours of K-9 searching, the suspect in this incident remains at-large. The Salem Police Department and its partner agencies have suspended their tactical search for the suspect and have turned the crime scenes over to detectives.

Due to the ongoing investigation we cannot release any suspect information at this time. More details will be released as they become available.

On May 14, 2019, at approximately 8:30 p.m. a Salem Police officer conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of Highland AV NE. During the stop a suspect shot at the officer. The officer was injured and was transported to a local medical facility.

The suspect then fled in the vehicle. The vehicle was located unoccupied shortly soon after. Currently, tactical teams are conducting a K-9 search in the area near Broadway AV NE and Locust ST NE. We are asking that residents in the area please stay inside while the K-9 track is taking place.

This is an ongoing event and as such details will not be released until more information becomes available or the incident is resolved.
