Record Shootings Continue with 3 Victims in the Lloyd District

Two women and a man are recovering after they were shot in Portland’s Lloyd District in the early hours of Sunday morning.  Experts say they are just the latest victims suffering from a dangerous, record setting trend.

The victims went to a hospital, after officers found them shot outside a bar in the 1400 block of Northeast Broadway.  They believe the injuries are not life threatening.

Law enforcement experts like Damara Gonzales with the F.B.I. in Oregon point out: “We’ve seen in 2021 probably the largest amount of active shootings that we’ve had.”

In Portland alone, Central, East and North precincts are already ahead of last year’s shootings, and the city’s on track for a thousand shooting incidents by the end of the year.

Portland police have already responded to more than 830 shootings this year, on track to break last year’s record of 891.

Multnomah County leaders announced a new plan to fight the violence last week.

At the state level: Lieutenant Kyle Kennedy is the Threat Assessment Team Manager for the Oregon State Police.  He says this summer they trained ten teams to spot signs that someone is planning a violent act like a shooting.  “The end goal of these teams is really to go unnoticed, so that the teams can work with individuals, knock them off the pathway to violence,” says Kennedy.  He says the goal is to train and place teams in every county in the state.
