–ORIGINAL STORY–

Portland, Ore. — (Update) A man armed with a sharp object described by witnesses as an AX-or-HATCHET was shot and killed by police officers in Southeast Portland. Police say the suspect was trying to break into a car late Tuesday afternoon in the Safeway parking lot near 122nd and Burnside. When he was confronted by a security officer he ran away. Then at some point officers engaged the suspect. They used non-lethal force at first. It’s unclear what happened next, that led to the deadly shooting. Portland Police Lieutenant Tina Jones says this happened near 120th and Ash. KGW caught up with a woman who was doing a FACEBOOK LIVE video in her apartment nearby at the time and captured the gunfire in the background. So far no names have been released. The officers involved in the shooting are now on paid-leave.

The Portland Police Bureau is investigating an officer-involved shooting in the area of the 12100 block of Southeast Ankeny Street. The involved officer is not injured. The involved suspect has been pronounced deceased at the scene. There is no on-going risk to the community related to this incident.

Southeast 122nd Avenue is closed from East Burnside to Stark Street and several connecting side streets are impacted by the closure. These closures are likely to remain in effect for an estimated five to six hours or longer as the scene is processed by the Forensic Evidence Division members.
