VANCOUVER, Wash. — Police say a man shot at a woman and an officer in Vancouver early Tuesday morning before abandoning his vehicle and taking off.

We have learned this started as an act of domestic violence when the officer spotted the suspect firing a gun at another vehicle on East Fourth Plain Boulevard near Grand Blvd. around 1:00am and take off westbound in the eastbound lanes.

Investigators say the officer believed the suspect fired at him and returned fire at some point during the pursuit.  The officer was treated for injuries from flying glass.

The man got onto Interstate 5 driving southbound in the northbound lanes before being spotted again on I-5 northbound at the Fourth Plain exit, which was closed until just before 6:00.  The vehicle was found in the area, but the suspect who is known to investigators got away.

The female was not injured.  Police say she was in a domestic relationship with the suspect.

The officer involved was identified Thursday as Officer Keith Kircher.  He’s 32-years-old and was hired last August.
