Oregon State Student Convicted of Hate Crime Faces New Charge
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon State University graduate student previously convicted of a hate crime is facing a new, unrelated charge.
The Corvallis Gazette-Times reported Wednesday that 28-year-old Andrew Joseph Oswalt has been charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief in the second degree.
Oswalt is accused of damaging a sign in July 2017 and is scheduled to be arraigned March 25.
Oswalt was found guilty in November of first-degree intimidation and third-degree criminal mischief for placing racist bumper stickers on cars.
The newspaper reports that Oswalt served 30 days in jail and was released in January before re-enrolling at the university.
An attorney representing Oswalt has filed a notice of intent to appeal the initial conviction, but would not comment on why he was initially denied a defense attorney by the court in February.
