Oregon Reports Two Flu Deaths, Lower Vaccine Rates

Portland, Ore. -Two children in Oregon died of influenza in late December, according to data released by the Oregon Health Authority.

The deaths occurred during the week of Dec. 22, according to OHA’s weekly influenza report. No further details were provided.

In addition to the fatalities, 474 hospitalizations for influenza have been reported this season across Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties, compared to 134 during the same period last year. OHA estimates the current flu hospitalization rate at 26.2 per 100,000 residents.

Across the Columbia River in Clark County, Washington, the flu positivity rate was around 35% for the last week of December, according to Clark County Public Health Officer Dr. Alan Melnick. During the same period, more than 5.5% of all hospitalizations in the county were due to influenza.

Vaccination rates for influenza have also declined, with OHA reporting a 4% drop compared to last year. Rates have been steadily decreasing since the 2022-2023 flu season.

Health officials in both Oregon and Washington are encouraging vaccinations as the most effective way to prevent severe illness from influenza and other diseases. Residents with lingering cold symptoms lasting more than four weeks are advised to consult a physician.
