GRESHAM, Ore. — Witnesses reported a man was unresponsive in the Sandy River near Oxbow Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses say 46-year-old Derek Johnson of Portland was stand-up paddling when he fell into the water and did not resurface. He was not wearing a lifejacket.
Authorities used a raft to search the river and locate his body. He was taken to shore where paramedics declared him dead. The medical examiner says he drowned.
Johnson is the second person to die in the river this month.
