Large Duplex Fire In Kalama Leaves Family Homeless

Kalama, Wash. –Cowlitz County Fire District 5 received a dispatch call on July 12th at 6:19 PM regarding a duplex fire in the 700 block of Military Road. The initial report stated that flames were observed coming out of the windows, and concerned neighbors were uncertain if anyone was inside the unit. Consequently, a 2nd alarm was promptly requested.
A young boy residing in a neighboring duplex noticed the fire and promptly alerted the occupants of the affected duplex. It is believed that his swift actions potentially prevented harm to the family. The fire originated on the exterior of the duplex, catching the occupants unaware of the peril they faced.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that both units of the duplex had been evacuated. They immediately initiated efforts to combat the fire. Unfortunately, prior to their arrival, the fire had already extended into the attic. Nevertheless, the firefighters managed to promptly suppress the flames, preventing their spread to the second living unit. Three additional departments, namely Longview Fire, Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue, and Cowlitz Fire District 1 from Woodland, provided assistance in containing the fire. The Red Cross was called upon to aid the displaced family.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
