Keizer, Or. –  Keizer Police say an SUV fire was set on purpose and was retaliation for the owner’s attempts to dismantle a roadside memorial in honor of three teens who were killed by a suspected drunk driver. The fire happened hours after the man had words with some other people at the roadside memorial, which is about a mile and a half away from his home.

Police had responded to a disturbance call at the memorial site Wednesday night and found the man and several others arguing. Police say the man told the others he was there to clean up and throw the items away. Police diffused the situation. They say they don’t think the SUV owner and the people he was arguing with knew each other.

Police say the memorial did not create an obstacle for passers-by and did not endanger the public and the man had no lawful responsibility to get rid of items at the site.

Police want to hear from anyone with information about the SUV fire.
