It’s The Last Day To Register To Vote In Oregon
Portland, Ore. — Oregon’s 2023 special election is just around the corner, with ballots due on May 16. However, for those who still need to register or update their registration, Tuesday, April 25 is the last day to do so.
Unlike several states that allow residents to register and vote on Election Day, Oregon has a registration waiting period of three weeks. This means that new voters who register after April 25 will not be eligible to vote in the May 16 election.
The special election includes a Multnomah County Commission race, local school board races, and three local ballot measures. To register or check registration status, Oregonians can use the Secretary of State’s online My Vote system. The deadline to file new registrations or updates is 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ballots are scheduled to start being mailed out on Wednesday, with the last of them scheduled to be mailed out by May 2. However, Multnomah County recently announced an error and will need to reprint nearly all of its ballots, delaying their delivery to voters. Those who have already received their original ballots can still vote using them, but replacements can also be requested.
Ballots must be submitted by 8 p.m. on May 16, either by mail or at a drop box. Under a new law passed in 2021, mailed-in ballots will still be counted up to a week after Election Day if postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The state’s drop box locator tool will go live 20 days before the election.
