Healing: One Paddle At A Time

26 ladies from the Portland and Vancouver areas are heading to New Zealand.  They’re representing the U.S. in the Dragon Boat Races.

These ladies are unique because they are cancer survivors, ranging in age all the way into their 80’s!   There are two teams, Pink Phoenix, and Catch 22.  Normally they compete against each other, but for this, they’ve teamed up to represent our country at the races.  Their motto is One Paddle At a Time.  The intense sport helps those who have cancer to feel empowered, be more self-confident, and take back control of their lives.

We talked to one of the rowers, Tamara Greenwell, who tells us she was caught by surprise when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40’s. You can hear her story here:

There’s a fundraiser for the women today at Burgerville on S.E Mill Plain in Vancouver.  20% of sales will help the team get to New Zealand.  The event is from 4pm to 8pm.
