YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) – Former Wapato city administrator Juan Orozco has been released from jail after a judge ruled there was no basis for the arrest.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Yakima County deputies arrested Orozco on suspicion of official misconduct Tuesday.
Yakima County Prosecutor Joseph Brusic says the arrest was prompted by concerns that Orozco was a flight risk.
Orozco resigned as the city’s mayor in September 2018 and was appointed to a newly created city administrator position.
He left that role in July after Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit alleging Orozco appointed himself to the job for unlawful enrichment.
Yakima County Superior Court Judge Douglas Federspiel ruled Wednesday that authorities did not have probable cause to make the arrest.
Orozco’s attorney, Greg Scott, says the judge’s ruling was appropriate.
