Eugene Man Hurt In Fall From North Sister Volcano Rescued

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a 21-year-old Eugene man who planned to hike up and then ski down North Sister was near the summit when he fell, slid and was injured, prompting a rescue effort.

KTVZ-TV reports Robert Kalmbach called 911 around 10:20 a.m. to report he was hurt and needed help, said Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue coordinator Lt. Bryan Husband.

Husband says Kalmbach and Michael Martin of Eugene had set out from the Pole Creek Trailhead to summit the volcanic peak earlier Monday.

Kalmbach says they made it almost to the 10,085-foot (3,074-meter) summit when Kalmbach fell.

Husband says an AirLink helicopter crew flew volunteers to a spot below the two men’s location and that rescuers climbed up to him, put him in a rescue sled and lowered him to the helicopter.

He was taken to a Bend hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
