Daughters of Slain Officer to Sue Tacoma Police

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) – The daughters of a slain Tacoma police officer intend to sue the Tacoma Police Department, claiming Tacoma officers should have arrested the suspect two weeks before their father was killed.

KIRO-TV reports Antonia, Gabriella and Victoria Gutierrez on Wednesday filed the notice in Pierce County Superior Court.

Police say Reginald Jake Gutierrez was killed Nov. 30, 2016, by Bruce Johnson during a standoff and eventual shoot-out with police.

Johnson was killed by officers after he shot Gutierrez 24 times.

Court documents say Johnson walked through the Tacoma Mall with a rifle case earlier that November. Documents say police who contacted Johnson found a rifle but failed to arrest him despite an active warrant for his arrest.

Tacoma Police Department spokeswoman Loretta Cool says the department doesn’t comment on pending legal action.
