Column Collapses at Lewis & Clark College, Killing Student, Injuring Two

PORTLAND, Ore. — A brick column collapsed on the campus of Lewis & Clark College on Monday night, killing a young man and injuring two women on the first day of classses.

Portland Fire say six people were hanging in three hammocks when a masonry column fell toward them.

Emergency workers tried, but could not save a 19-year-old man.  Two 18-year-old women suffered serious injuries to the abdomen and arm.

Lewis & Clark released this statement: “We are devastated to report that earlier this evening, a tragic accident occurred on the undergraduate campus in which one of our students was killed and two others were injured. We are working to contact the students’ families and will report more information as it becomes available. We are deeply saddened by the shocking loss of a member of our community.”
