Climate Change March And Rally In Downtown Portland Today
Portland, Ore. -Climate Change is on the minds of demonstrators across the globe today, including here in Portland. Expect to see large groups of students and workers walking down Portland streets starting around 11:30am. Portland public schools is allowing students to take part provided that made arrangements to leave school headed of time. The kids tell us they’re looking forward to participating. Univesity students also will skip classes. A rally at Portland city hall will start at 10:30am and a permitted march will leave there at 11:30am making it’s way over the Hawthorne Bridge to the East Bank Espalanade. A festival for change will take place there until 5pm this afternoon. Students walking out today have a list of demands including that Mayor Ted Wheeler not attend a climate summit in Cophenhagen. The Portland Police Bureau would like to make the public aware of a planned demonstration and march on Friday, September 20th in Downtown Portland. The intent of law enforcement is to provide a safe environment for all participants, non-participants, and community members while ensuring the peaceful exercise of the First Amendment.
The event organizers have applied for and been granted a permit for a street march, which is expected to begin at about 11:30 a.m. See attached map for anticipated area of impact. The time of the march and area impacted is dependent upon the number of participants.
The Police Bureau encourages road users to be aware of the potential for traffic interruptions and to plan for alternate routes in and around Downtown Portland.

The demonstration organizers are working with a demonstration liaison for this event.
The Portland Police Bureau anticipates a peaceful event and encourages participants to use sidewalks and obey traffic control devices while coming to or from the event. Additionally, any direction given by police officers or the sound truck should be followed.
