Portland, Oregon- Update Portland police have confirmed they are investigating a death near the Portland State University Campus. Police say they got 911 calls Thanksgiving night to check on someone yelling and running in the streets near Southwest 6th and Mill. PSU campus police reportedly struggled with the man and they had to call Portland Police for help. At some point the person was restrained and taken to the hospital for treatment. Investigators believe then at some point the man suffered a medical event and died at the hospital. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Police had the area around SW 6th and Mill shutdown for several hours during the investigation.

DEATH INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AFTER SUBJECT TRANSPORTED TO AREA HOSPITAL

On Thursday, November 22, 2018, at 8:19 p.m., Central Precinct Officers and Portland State University Police Department Officers responded to perform a welfare check near Southwest 6th Avenue and Southwest Mill Street on multiple reports of a subject yelling and running in the streets.

Portland State University Police Department Officers located a person matching the description provided by callers to 9-1-1. The subject, an adult male, reportedly struggled with the Portland State University Police Department Officers and they requested assistance from the responding Central Precinct officers. After Central Precinct officers arrived, the subject was restrained and based on his behavior, officers requested the subject be transported to an area hospital by ambulance for treatment. At this time investigators believe the man suffered a medical event and died while receiving treatment at a Portland hospital.

The identity of the man and the manner and/or cause of his death will be provided after a member of the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office completes an autopsy and the man’s next of kin are notified.

Portland Police Detectives assigned to the Homicide Detail are responding to continue this investigation. Members with the Police Bureau’s Professional Standards Division are also responding to begin an internal administrative investigation.

It is very early in this investigation and more information will be provided as it is learned. There is no additional information available to provide at this time. The Portland Police Bureau will be the lead investigating agency regarding this incident.Â

The two Portland Police Bureau Officers who assisted Portland State University Police Department Officers will remain on paid administrative leave, per Bureau policy, until the completion of the investigation and it has been reviewed by the Multnomah County District Attorney.

As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is comprised of community members, Bureau members and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.

There are reports that a body has been discovered in Downtown Portland near Portland State University, according to an officer on scene who talked with a KXL reporter. We are still trying to get confirmation from officials about the possible death. More information will be released as soon as it is made available.  Southwest 6th Avenue is currently closed between Market and Montgomery, and police are still on scene this morning.
