Battle Ground Police Department Introduces Comfort Dog

Battle Ground, Wa. – The Battle Ground Police Department has welcomed Rafferty, a two-year-old Labrador retriever, as its new Comfort Dog. Unlike police K9 units, comfort dogs are trained to help reduce anxiety and enhance communication during interactions, especially with those affected by trauma.

Rafferty will support the department’s Peer Support Team, assisting first responders, crime victims, and witnesses during crises. The comfort dog program was made possible through a donation from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Rafferty, originally trained as a guide dog, has transitioned to his new role with handler Lt. Jason Perdue.

“Rafferty will be a valuable resource for both the department and the community,” said Chief Dennis Flynn. The Comfort Dog will also contribute to the department’s community engagement efforts, fostering trust and positive relationships.
