6.0 Earthquake Strikes Off Oregon Coast; No Tsunami Expected

Portland, Ore. – A 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook an area around 170 miles off the coast of Bandon, Oregon, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. and was measured at a depth of about 6.2 miles along the Blanco Fracture Zone on the edge of the Juan de Fuca plate.

While the quake’s release of tectonic tension along the Cascadia subduction zone highlights the region’s vulnerability to a larger seismic event, this offshore earthquake was rated “green” by the USGS, indicating minimal risk to life or property. Officials confirmed that no tsunami warnings were issued following the quake, and there is no anticipated threat to the Pacific Northwest.
