Sewage Leak Leads Bend Hospital to Cancel Surgeries

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Officials from a Bend hospital say a sewage leak led them to cancel some surgeries and left patients without water to shower or use toilets for several hours.

The Bulletin reports hospital staff discovered the leak Tuesday morning in the central processing department where surgical instruments are cleaned and sterilized.

Hospital officials decided to halt water usage in the building.

Some elective surgeries were cancelled.

Trauma cases or other urgent procedures were not diverted.

Patients were provided with commodes that they could use in place of toilets.

Staff say the leak was temporarily fixed within a couple of hours and the water restrictions were lifted.

Parts needed to permanently fix the leak are expected to arrive on Thursday.
