Timbers Bolster Playoff Position
A lone Diego Valeri goal proves to be enough for the Timbers as they hold on to defeat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 at JELD-WEN Field on Friday Night.
Portland gains a crucial three points as teams continue to jockey for position in a crowded Western Conference picture.
And all the offense they needed in this one came early on in the 13th minute, when Diego Valeri intercepted a back pass by Colorado and chipped a shot high over Rapids GK Clint Irwin and into the back of the net.
Colorado struggled to find any offense of their own, despite out-shooting Portland 13-9 and having three times the number of corner kicks (9 to 3). Only once did the Rapids put a shot on frame.
Portland now sits third in the Western Conference with 46 points, leapfrogging the Galaxy and Rapids, and improve their record to 11-5-13 on the season.
The Timbers will host the Galaxy next in a game at JELD-WEN Field on September 29th.
