The Oregon State Beavers have a big conference matchup with the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City this weekend. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham joined Chad on Flight 750 Thursday to preview this weekend’s big showdown.Whittingham first talked about the effect that Dennis Erickson has had on the team since he was brought in as Offensive Coordinator.
“It’s been a huge value on a lot of different levels. He was brought in here primarily to jump start the offense and get us back on track offensively, which through two ball games we’ve really seen improvement. Beyond that, just for a resource for myself to be 10 feet down the hall and to be able to go into his office with virtually any situation that arises and knowing that he’s been there and done that and had experience at some point in his career with exactly the same situation is incredible.”
Whittingham also talked about what the Utes must do if they want to walk away with a victory Saturday night.
“The biggest key and the biggest thing that is going to be a determining factor in whether we’re able to slow Mannion down is the pass rush. That’s really where pass defense starts - at the line of scrimmage with the pass rush in the top four, and if we can’t get pressure and he’s able to go through his read progression with nobody in his face and nobody disrupting him, it’s going to be a long evening.”
And finally Coach Whittingham gave his opinion of Beavers’ Head Coach Mike Riley.
“He’s an excellent coach and a players’ coach. His players love him. They will do anything for him. They play hard. He’s created a great culture there at Oregon State and he’s done a fantastic job.”
