Since taking over at Eastern Washington University in 2008, head coach Beau Baldwin has coached the Eagles to a Division I National Championship in 2010 and a Division I semifinal in 2012. He joined Chad on Flight 750 Tuesday to talk about his time as Head Coach of the Eagles as well as this weekend’s matchup with the Oregon State Beavers.Baldwin first talked about his time coaching NFL quarterback John Kitna at Central Washington.
“I was blessed to get going in coaching at an early age and actually coach the position at an early age. I actually coached John just his last two years. So his junior and senior year, but I was only 22-23 those first couple years. So I was learning on the fly just as well. But it was a great experience for me.”
Baldwin also talked about the challenge of opening the season versus the Beavers of Oregon State.
“You’re not just playing a Pac-12 team. You’re playing a top-level Pac-12 team. With what coach Riley’s done there and the stability he’s built – You know they’re coming off a bowl season - So it’s not as if you’re playing a team that’s still fighting to make its way in a conference. They’ve been consistent for awhile now. They know who they are. They know what they do and you can see that on both sides of the ball.”
And finally Baldwin talked about OSU Head Coach Mike Riley.
“I just remember even as an assistant in 2006 going down there and playing. To me he just treats everyone the same. And that always stuck with me and I could see that as he’s interacting with different people. To me, that’s true character.”
