BIGGS JUNCTION -- The man who police say opened fire on an Oregon State Trooper and was shot and killed on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles on Thursday afternoon had his three children in the back seat.
An autopsy found that 34-year-old John Van Allen II from Portand was shot in the chest. Police fired several rounds during a traffic stop.
After shooting Trooper Matthew Zistel, Van Allen took off. He was found slumped over the wheel about a half-mile away.
The children, a 10-year-old girl and two boys, ages 13 and 15 are now in custody of the state.
The trooper is 26-years-old and a five-year veteran of OSP. He's at home recovering from a gunshot wound to his side. Trooper Zistel was doing safety enforcement in a construction zone when he encountered the suspect.
