New Sidewalks Won't Make Fat People Less Fat
First Portland lays on a crazy arts tax where a big chunk of the tax is
spent just hiring the city apparatchiks to collect it, and exempting government
workers of course. Now the mayor wants a
carbon tax. What’s that all about?

evil activities of people driving to work and turning up their thermostats. No, the mayor’s new tax is to pay for
sidewalks. That’s right sidewalks.
I guess on the theory that if you have spiffy
new sidewalks, obese Americans will pop up off the sofa and walk ten miles to
work. This city that is short of
sidewalk cash somehow has millions to bail out a rental bicycle deal it never
should have started. It has money for
the arts, and a bunch of other fluff and gewgaws…but no money to fix the
streets and sidewalks? I’d say Mayor Charlie has his priorities messed up and
voters we hope will say no to this nutty new tax.
