More Homeless Campers At Schrunk Plaza.
By Pat Boyle
Portland, Oregon - More homeless campers are gathering at Terry Schrunk Plaza across from Portland City Hall. I counted 43 people sleeping on the sidewalk this morning. They began moving back to the plaza as it opened at 7a.m. and will stay there until officials tell them to leave when it closes at 10 p.m.
Portlanders passing by the plaza call it an eyesore and a blight for the city. One man said he didn't mind the campers but has noticed their numbers have increased.
The GSA which oversees the park has issued a statement saying GSA
allows for peaceful demonstrations and community use of public space
under our jurisdiction. In the interest of safety and preserving the property,
anyone remaining on the plaza after the posted hours of 7 am to 10 pm will be
asked to leave. Federal Protective Service will begin to notify
individuals still on the plaza at 10:00 p.m. that they must evacuate the
premises until 7:00 a.m. when the plaza reopens.
