Rube Goldberg Energy Policies...
I know I’m dating myself but Oregon’s energy
policy reminds me of the cartoons done by Rube Goldberg…you know, machines with
complicated designs that only a government bureaucrat could love. The latest is a so called “hydro power” proposal
for central Oregon. Now, I love real
hydro. Generate power from rivers
constantly replenished by the gentle rain that falls upon the land. This is different. We have windmills in the northwest that don’t
make dollars and sense. So the taxpayers subsidize their construction. And we subsidize the power they make. And the wind don’t blow all the time, so they
usually turn one hour in five and often they make power when we don’t need
it. So now an Idaho company wants to
build a reservoir near Prineville where the inefficient taxpayer funded
windmills power will be used to pump water UPHILL and store it till we need the
power and then let the water run downhill.
None of this is efficient or sensible or pencils out. But hey, taxpayers and ratepayers have all
kinds of money to waste so we’ll do it anyway.
Rube Goldberg was amusing. This isn't.
