Mult. Co. Chair Cogen Admits to Affair
By Pat Boyle
Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen says he will not resign even though he admits to an 18 month affair with a county policy adviser. He told The Oregonian there's still a lot to do at Multnomah County and it does not feel like the right time to walk away.
Cogen's confession comes after an e mail made the rounds among county employees suggesting Sonia Manhas' promotion at the County Health Department was partly due to her extramarital affair with Cogen.
Cogen says he told his wife about the affair Tuesday and plans to take some time off to try to patch things up. Cogen and his wife have been married 28 years and have two children.
He issued a statement to county workers which says "My personal actions have caused my family grief and tarnished the great work that all you do. I sincerely apologize for that. I take full responsibility for my actions. No one-- not my family and certainly not any of Multnomah County's great employees--deserves this kind of behavior.
We asked on our Facebook page if you think he should resign. Comments range from "No; it is a free country and we should be able to decide who we want to be with" to "they should both be fired for conspiring to defraud."
