Police tape blocks off the area

A 10-year-old boy didn't get to see the fireworks with his family. He was in a hospital bed in critical condition after being hit by a car in Southeast Portland late this morning.
The child was walking with his family in the crosswalk at 82nd and Center. They were in the island between the lanes when Peter Chen stepped out into traffic and was hit by a vehicle going southbound.
"The cops were saying that he might not make it originally, and that’s why they were putting up all the tape," said witness Annika Donaldson.
The 58-year-old woman behind the wheel was not at fault.
