Former University of Oregon DB Walter Thurmond III is coming back to Oregon this weekend to give back to the community. Thurmond and former U of O teammate, Dennis Dixon are putting on a football camp at Clackamas high school Saturday June, 29 to honor former duck Chris Annis. Thurmond joined Chad Monday to talk about the camp and discuss his upcoming NFL season for the Seattle Seahawks.
Thurmond attended the U of O from 2006-2009 and played in Nick Aliotti’s defense for four years. He talked a little bit about his time at the U of O and how the culture really changed throughout his four years.
“We had a lot of core guys who really wanted to take that next step in being a great program…The summer going into next season was really the changing point to the program. We made everything mandatory, guys had to make a certain number of workouts...We really changed the culture up there and really wanted to get guys to come on board and really put the effort in to want to be great and it has shown the past couple years.”
Thurmond also talked about Seahawks' quarterback Russell Wilson and how he is respected by the team.
“His work ethic - He is the first one in and the last one out. He is really a student of the game and his situation when he played pro baseball for a little while, I think that helped him and matured him as an individual. He took that professionalism that he had from baseball and transferred it to football.”
In Thurmond’s senior season at Oregon he suffered a serious knee injury just three games into the season which sidelined him for the remainder of that 2009 season. Since being drafted by the Seahawks in 2010, Thurmond has had several other major injuries. He talked about how those injuries have helped him become the player he is now.
“I learned a lot about patience these last couple years and I think it has helped me out in becoming a better player and person in the long run. Really, just being able to persevere and never getting myself down and just being optimistic to whatever situation that I may encounter. Just keeping my faith in God and going from there.”
Take a listen to the great interview and be sure to check out the camp this Saturday June 29. You can also follow Thurmond on twitter at: @WaltThurm3.
