Scientists Look for Answers After Bees Perish
Conservationists are trying to get to the bottom of what killed tens of thousands of bees in Wilsonville. The dead bumble bees were first found outside the Target Monday night.
Rich Hatfield with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation told the Wilsonville Spokesman “They were literally falling out of the trees. To our knowledge this is one of the largest documented bumble bee deaths in the Western U.S. It was heartbreaking to watch.”
An ironic start to the National Pollinator Week. An annual event created to raise public awareness about the plight of bees.
The bees were clustered around a group of European Lindin trees. Experts have taken samples of the tree to see if it's poisonous. They also think that a pesticide could be to blame.
