Tragedy at High Rocks
A man who jumped into the Clackamas River just downstream of High Rocks Monday afternoon has died. He has been identified as 61-year old Jack Davies of Sherwood.
Brandon Paxton with Clackamas Fire and Rescue tells KXL they arrived just before 3:00 p.m. The man had jumped into the water around 2:25 p.m. when he and his son were swimming. Davies swam out in the middle of the river to get the family dog when he was pulled under.
"This time of year the water is so cold, it's melted snow runoff from the mountain. It often takes people by surprise. In addition people are in a position where they can't negate the effects of the cold water, and it can take their breath away," said SGT Paul Coleman with the Clackamas County Sheriffs Office.
Paxton says an ambulance took him to Willamette Falls Hospital where he initially had a pulse, but died soon after.
