John Salley is a four-time NBA Champion with the Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. He joined Chad on Flight 750 Friday to talk about his great NBA career.Salley explained that the style of play that he and the rest of the Pistons played on those “Bad Boy” teams is unlike anything you would see nowadays in the NBA.
“Everybody there was in one mind. Everybody wanted to win the championship. Everybody wanted to be the best in the league. We all wanted to prove everybody wrong. Back in the day, they called us the “Bad Boys.” But I’m so happy that we were the Bad Boys because from what I saw and understood, the way we played is the way the NBA used to be played.”
He also said that when the Pistons got back to the finals in 1989, they only wanted to play the Lakers - So that they could try to avenge the Finals loss from the season before.
“We only wanted to play the Lakers in the Finals. It was ‘Oh. We’ve got to beat everybody up because if we want a chance to win the championship, we’ve got to get home court advantage.' If we get home court, we would win.”
Salley also said that to this day, he is still bitter toward the Laker teams from 1988 and 1989.
“When they came into our house, it was a brand new building…I still have bruises and bad blood in my mouth about that Laker team. And since it was Kareem’s last year, we thought it was just the proper thing to send him out with a loss.”
