Peter Jacobsen is one of the best golfers to come out of the state of Oregon. He had seven PGA Tour victories including a US Senior Open victory in 2004. He joined Chad on Flight 750 live from Merion Golf Club Tuesday to preview this weekend’s US Open Championship.
Jacobsen insists that the weather is definitely going to have an effect on the course this weekend – But it will probably be to the players’ benefit.
“I was out there all day and it is really wet. There is just mud everywhere. All the parking lots are under water. It’s really a muddy mess right now, but the good news is we didn’t get any rain today. So the golf course is drying out, but it is pretty sloppy.”
Jacobsen also talked about the era of golf that he played in. He insists that going up against many of the best players in the tour’s history, allowed him to become a better player himself.
“Whenever you have a chance to play with them you get to kind of measure your game against them. And that’s really how you improve. You measure how you drive the ball against them. You measure your iron play, your short game and obviously your scoring ability. So that’s really how we improve and how we measure ourselves and measure our progress when we play against and with the great players of the game.”
And finally Jacobsen talked about the field of golfers at the Open this week. In his mind, Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker both have good chances of ending up victorious this weekend. But he insists that the smart money is on Tiger Woods.
“I know everybody’s probably rolling their eyes saying ‘Yeah, yeah easy pick, Tiger Woods’ – But Tiger’s a smart player. I’ve always said that any time you can take the Driver out of Tiger’s hands, he has a chance to win. Of all the great players in the game, he’s probably the worst driver. “
