15,000 Lose Power in Washington County
Much of Sherwood, Tualatin and Tigard was in the dark this afternoon when a tree fell onto power lines on Highway 99W, causing a surge that damaged about 20 residential meters. One meter was blown off a house on SW Cereghino Lane.
It knocked out power to around 15,000 customers of Portland General Electric. As of 5:20pm, service has been restored to all but around 600 in Sherwood.
Dozens of people called 9-1-1 reporting everything from smoke to small fires and dead traffic signals, but there were no reports of injuries. Students were let out of Sherwood High School early because it was dark.
There were several other outages today. Nearly 5,000 customers in Southeast Portland and Clackamas County were without power this morning after two crashes took out poles and lines. 1,600 homes and businesses in Woodburn lost electricity for more than an hour this afternoon.
PGE offers these tips in the event of an outage. Treat intersections without working traffic signals as a four-way stop. Don't touch exposed electrical meters or wiring, and instead call 911. Check on your elderly neighbors. Use flashlights or light sticks, but not candles.
