Star Tennis Player Killed in Diving Accident
Rovello in action
A star tennis player for both the University of Oregon and Cleveland High School died in a diving accident this weekend.
21-year-old Alex Rovello
, a junior from Portland, jumped off a 60-foot cliff at Tamolitch Falls into the McKenzie River. He hit face and chest first and never resurfaced. Authorities say alcohol was not involved.
Friends and witnesses tried to rescue Rovello, but the water was too deep and just 37 degrees. Cell service was lacking, so a witness ran over two miles to get a signal to call 911.
Deputies found Rovello's body around 35 feet from the surface.
"He was an amazing person and teammate and his spirit will live on forever with all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him," said Ducks head men's tennis coach Nils Schyllander.
A memorial service is planned for this Saturday.
