Gary Player: Well Played Laddie
is synonymous with the game of golf, and he joined The Bald Faced Truth today to discuss his legendary career and his thoughts on the Players Championship
Player spoke very candidly about his very first tour win, “I think I broke 70 every time and won the tournament. I won $2,800 and I will never forget that. When I look at the scores that we shot in those days (Arnold, Jack, and myself) with inferior clubs, how about what Bobby Jones did with Hickory shot clubs and a ball that wasn’t even round. I just wish that Arnold, Jack and could have had the opportunity of playing a golf course like they’re playing [on] this week.”
Player also recalled how he got into the game of golf “In South Africa, where I lived in Johannesburg we had a 100 golf courses in a 60 mile radius. Every gold mine had its own golf course and my father who worked in a gold mine, asked me to go out and play with him; which I did and of course I got the bug and thank goodness I did.”
Player also recalled fondly his experiences in playing golf in the beautiful state of Oregon, “I played many, many times on the tour there. I also played in a match where my son and I played against Jack Nicklaus and his son at a Peter Jacobsen event. But I’ve played in lots of golf tournaments there and the people are so nice and the area was just so refreshing.”
