Kyle Turley: Accuses the NFL of Negligence
Former NFL All-Pro OT and current Country music star Kyle Turley
is on a crusade to hold the NFL responsible for what he deems to be a negligent attitude toward NFL player safety. Turley joined John Canzano on The Bald Faced Truth today to discuss the suit, as well as his new career in Country Music.
Turley stated, “the negligence around that situation with me in 2003 with the Rams was criminal! Knowing the information that was out there about concussions and how serious of nature these injuries were, and the way the NFL dealt with them, was sit you on the sideline and continue to keep asking how you were, and if you could go back in.”
Turley currently is having his case heard before Philadelphia federal judge Anita Brody, in which Turley claims the NFL deliberately hid the dangers of head trauma from NFL players. Turley isn't alone in his quest to hold the NFL accountable, as there are currently over 200 consolidated cases from former players who feel the NFL is responsible for their current physical and mental conditions. Other players involved in the suit include Jim McMahon, Kevin Turner, Don Majkowski, Jamal Anderson, Lindsey Scott and Steve Smith.
Judge Brody will ultimately decide whether these cases will be heard in federal court, or if they will have to go through the NFL's CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) process. Judge Brody has finished with the hearings, but has yet to make a ruling as she has implied that she needs more time to examine the facts.
Turley and the others feel that this should be an open and shut case. Turley said,
"[My mental issues] had nothing to do with drugs, had nothing to do with alcohol, but everything to do with the deterioration of my brain I believe, after speaking with these doctors; from the way we played the game and the ignorance and the viewings of how we [the NFL] dealt with concussions."
