Bomb Threat Shuts Down Steel Bridge
Portlanders got quite the scare Tuesday evening during rush hour traffic. The bomb squad shut down the Steel Bridge after they received a call to 911. The person told dispatchers that they saw a man drop a box off on the bridge then take off on his bike into a neighborhood.
The bridge was closed or 90-minutes as investigators inspected the box. It turned out that it was a tool box that had fallen off a Tri-Met maintenance truck. And the man he saw, was in fact a good samaritan just moving the box off the road and onto the sidewalk.
Portland Police SGT Pete Simpson told KXL "We wanna stress to people, that was a very appropriate 911 call. Given all the information available, that was very unusual behavior, and is in a potential high profile area. The fact that it turned out to be a mistake, to have a tool box fall out is sort of immaterial".
Simpson also said the response to the situation would have been the same, and was not heightened because of the tragedy in Boston.
