Safety Changes Coming to Troubled 136th Avenue
Changes are ahead for a dangerous section of 136th Avenue in Southeast Portland that doesn't have sidewalks. It was called for after a 5-year-old girl was hit by a car and killed there in February.
The city has found $1.2 million in the budget to pay for new sidewalks, but says there's not enough money to do all of 136th. The project will get underway this fall. It stretches about 2/3 of a mile from Powell to Holgate, north of where Morgan Cook was struck.
Legislators are asking the state to fund $3 million to fund the next two phases of the project, which would improve the street at the spot where Cook was killed.
There's a public meeting on the issue next Monday evening at 7:00pm at Russell Middle School on SE 112th and Bush.
