House at 32 NE Fremont

People were seen running from a house in Northeast Portland as it caught fire late this morning.  It sent a cloud of white smoke high over the city.

One person jumped from a second story window while another went out the front door of the home on Fremont and Cleveland Avenue.  Crews did a stellar job keeping the flames away from homes just feet away.

The house was destroyed.  It was originally reportedly as occupied by squatters, but that was later found not to be the case.  Six people are staying elsewhere because of the damage.

Investigators found the cause in a couch.  A careless smoker is blamed for sparking the fire.
