Pope Benedict XVI
In a stunning move that hasn't been seen in nearly 600 years, Pope Benedict XVI announced that his is resigning his post at the end of the month.

The 85-year-old German born pontiff says he is no longer physically able to perform his duties.  The Vatican says a new leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics could be elected as soon as Palm Sunday, on March 24 and be ready to take over by Easter a week later.

Archbishop Alexander Sample who will lead the Portland Catholics starting in April has met Pope Benedict and says there is a sadness, but says he has great respect for him.  Sample called Benedict a humble man.

Archbishop George Vlanzy issued the following statement today
:

The Holy Father’s announcement of his resignation of the papacy on February 28, albeit totally unexpected, is consistent with his understanding and embrace of all ministry in the church as a service to the church and the world, much like that of the one whose Vicar he became back on April 19, 2005, Jesus Christ.  Pope Benedict, true to his name, has been a source of so many blessings in his life as priest, bishop and chief pastor of our Catholic Church.

This decision surely results from the Pope’s personal prayer, great wisdom and genuine love of the church.  The demands of his office have changed greatly during his lifetime.  I must say that I admire him all the more for acknowledging with humility and trust in divine providence the need he has felt for a change in the leadership  of our worldwide Catholic family.  On behalf of all the Catholics here in western Oregon, I assure our dear Pope of our great appreciation for his gentle, compassionate and faithful service.   I likewise promise the support of our prayers during this time of transition in the Holy See and throughout the coming years when he plans to continue his primary ministry of prayer for all of us.  Viva il papa!
